Useful Travel Tips

  • The summers are hot and dry in Philippines. Light cotton clothing is ideal year-round and must during the hot and dry months from March to May.

  • English is the most widely spoken next to Filipino, the national language. Learning the basic local phrases may come in handy.

  • When visiting the remote areas, come prepared with an insect repellant and the island map with you.

  • Avoid swimming and paddling in stagnant water. Swimming pools that are well chlorinated and maintained are safe.

  • All international credit cards such as Diners, American Express, MasterCard and Visa are accepted in hotels, shops and other commercial establishments including the tour operators. Travellers Cheques are also widely accepted at major establishments. Tipping is expected for many services. The standard amount is 10% of the total bill.

  • Philippine currency notes are available in denominations of P1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of P5, 2 and 1, and 50, 25 and 10 centavos.

  • The import and export of local currency is limited to P10, 000. Any amount above this must be authorized by the Central Bank of the Philippines. The import and export of foreign currency is unlimited, but must be declared over P10, 000.

  • Never forget to carry your essential medication with you. Though doctors and chemists stores are easily available in Philippines, the brand names can differ and your specific brand of medication may not be available.

  • Exchange your money only from authorized moneychangers or the Philippines Banks. It is advisable to carry a sufficient amount of Philippine pesos when traveling to other provinces.

  • In case of trouble, immediately contact the nearest police station or Philippines embassy.

Health & Vaccination

Water and Milk used for drinking should be boiled or sterilized. Bottled water is available in all hotels, restaurants, resorts, supermarkets, and convenience stores. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot.

Vaccination certificates are required if you are arriving from a small pox, typhus, yellow fever or plague infected areas. Following WHO guidelines of 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is not a condition of entry to the Philippines, unless travellers arrive from infected areas. Vaccinations against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Rabies are advisable. Dengue, Malaria and Cholera are other health risks and adequate precautions should be taken against them.
